This Friday, 3/21, is World Down Syndrome Day, an internationally-observed day celebrating people living with Down syndrome! The Golden Scoop will be celebrating, too, hosting our own company event to mark the date. Feel free to join us tomorrow at our 95th and Nall location!
World Down Syndrome Day was officially created in 2007. The 21st day of the month was chosen to symbolically represent trisomy 21, the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. The condition is named for English physician John Langdon Down (1828-1896), who first identified it in 1866 and dedicated his career to understanding the condition. At the time, infants born with Down syndrome were routinely sent to institutions on doctors’ orders to live out their lives away from society. This continued well into the late 20th century, but fortunately, these methods have today been phased out in favor of community-based support programs. Further information can be found at the website of the National Association for Down Syndrome: https://www.nads.org
The Golden Scoop recognizes the value of every uniquely-abled person, and that includes our employees! We can’t wait to celebrate Down Syndrome Day tomorrow!
