SERV’s up! On Saturday, September 12th, The Golden Scoop took part in a pickleball tournament against several local celebrities, including retired Kansas City baseball player Buddy Biancalana! It was “Scooper versus Super” (or is that the other way around?) and the whole crowd was ready for it. After a few words from The Golden Scoop’s CEO, Amber Schreiber, and a few more from yours truly, the exciting match began!
Representing The Golden Scoop were Super Scoopers Emma and Charlie, dressed in their pickleball best. Armed with rackets provided by SERV, they stepped onto the court to wild cheers from the assembled crowd! They squared off across the court; then, the ball went up in the air…WHAP! The match was on!
I spoke with Chad McFarland, organizer of the pickleball tournament, and he spoke about how he first got involved with The Golden Scoop. "I've known Amber since 2018, when Amber and her sister started working on Golden Scoop. I was working with them in a smaller capacity in marketing and social media, to help get some things going, and I stayed in contact with Amber and with Lindsay ever since," said McFarland.
When asked his thoughts on the mission of The Golden Scoop, McFarland said, "It's fantastic and very much needed in the Kansas City area, but [also] even outside the Kansas City area."
Putting on an event like a pickleball tournament takes a lot of people. "We have to have good partners to work with—the APP, the Association of Pickleball Players, has been a great partner for us to work with—and we wanted a way to kick off the tournament next week, September 17th through the 20th, and we thought, 'What a better way to put a benefit event together?'" said McFarland. "Knowing Amber and the mission of The Golden Scoop, we felt like SERV is a great venue to host something, so it's really just knowing the right people and putting connections together and getting everybody to say yes."
I asked how he hoped this event would benefit The Golden Scoop and our mission, and McFarland said, ". . .we brought a hundred t-shirts to sell, and all the proceeds goes back to The Golden Scoop, and then obviously, there's donation options outside of t-shirts for people to donate, raffle prizes, so if we could generate a couple thousand dollars in benefit for you guys, that would be amazing."
McFarland was passionate about the partnership between SERV and The Golden Scoop: "It's amazing. Amber is always open to new and fresh ideas; there's hardly ever a 'no' in working with you guys at The Golden Scoop, and so it's super easy and I would encourage anybody who wants to put an event on and find a beneficiary to have a conversation with Amber."
